The Times recently profiled Stephen Hargreaves, 52, a former City investment banker who retrained as a maths teacher. Expelled from school at 15, Stephen understands the impact trauma and low self-esteem can have on learning. He can relate to the “tougher” students:

As concerns about toxic masculinity are growing, the need for consistent, positive male role models is critical.
More than half of the Now Teach network is male compared with a third of the national teaching workforce. As our chief executive Graihagh Crawshaw-Sadler put it:
