From IT operations to Now Teach trainee

Cohort: September 2019 – June 2020
Where: Park Hall Academy
Subject: Biology

I was born in Calcutta, India but moved to the UK in 1980 living in London, Oxford and Leamington Spa, although for the last ten years I’ve been living in Munich, Germany. Now I’ve settled in Birmingham.

I stumbled into PC Support in 1988 when computers were in their infancy. Timing was fortuitous as PC Networking took off and I found myself an IT expert in demand. As I climbed the career ladder, I moved into management roles responsible for managing IT Operations and delivering IT Services in corporates. In 2002, following redundancy, I decided to try the public sector to have a more direct link between my job and improvement of local services. I found myself enjoying working with local government and helping improve services to Education departments.

I am thrilled and terrified in equal measure about the opportunity and challenges ahead of me.

Changing career direction

I’ve been involved with the education sector for large part of my career and in 2008 I started exploring teacher training, but my wife got her dream job in Munich, so we decided to move. I spoke no German but having done a TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) course I began teaching out there. I found that with my business background, I quickly got work focusing on Business English, working freelance through recommendations.

My wife focused on her career and I maintained flexibility to be a stay at home dad for our two sons while they were young. Now they’re older and both at school, I have more time available to return to a career. I came across Now Teach at the right time and I saw opportunity to realise something I’d planned to start 10 years ago.

I simply want to focus on becoming a good teacher and preparing students for their future as best I can.

Adding value in school

Overall, I think having life experience, maturity and resilience will be a benefit in the classroom and allow me to cope with whatever situation I face. I am no longer motivated by status or money nor am I looking to climb a career ladder. I simply want to focus on becoming a good teacher and preparing students for their future as best I can.

My experience of people, process, communication and change management are equally relevant in schools as in business. My particular IT and business background has been with companies or organisation who focus on providing products and services to schools. Working within a school would allow me to utilise my knowledge to help schools maximise their benefits from IT and achieve value for money.

Making an impact

A sound education helped me get to where I am and I can think of no better legacy than to help other young people go as far as their innate abilities will take them. I still remember Mr Paterson, my Biology teacher, and one measure of longer term success will be if one of my students remembers me.

I am thrilled and terrified in equal measure about the opportunity and challenges ahead of me.
