From civil engineering to Now Teach trainee
Cohort: September 2019 – June 2020
Where: Reach Academy
I enjoyed a 35-year career in international business with three Companies, initially as a Civil Engineer, moving into Finance, General Management and Company Leadership. I worked throughout Eastern & Western Europe with long term posting’s to Dubai, Pakistan and Ukraine. As a Civil Engineer I specialized in the design and construction of large-scale foundations working on sites such as Dartford Bridge. After my MBA I moved into the international fast-moving consumer business developing my skills in financial management and leadership.
My career didn’t follow a detailed plan. I always sought to develop, accept responsibility and new challenges. I settled on studying Civil Engineering as this was the most aligned subject to my initial interest. This exposed me to all the areas of foundations consultancy, design and construction plus the commercial reality of running profitable projects.
It was also clear that the support and resources are in place to enable a successful training year.
I first seriously considered teaching as a career at the age of 50 after completing 20 years with my employer. I wanted a change, have always loved mathematics and wanted to give something back. I spoke to several teachers, headmasters and spent time observing in two local schools. Although very interested in a teaching career I took the easier route of accepting another commercial role. Teaching remained an interest as I supported my children through their exams and tutored mathematics.
My introduction to Now Teach was through a press article followed by a search online and Lucy’s TED Talk. I then attended a Now Teach information evening. The approach of training in school, with external support and the 4-day timetable suited me. The process is structured and well managed. The short period between application, assessment and acceptance by Now Teach provided clarity and the opportunity to prepare properly for the school application process / training year. Now Teach are proactive, personable and have provided excellent support.
I have been considering teaching for years and the approach described by Now Teach closely matched my needs
Deciding to apply through Now Teach and then to Reach Academy was not big decision. I have been considering teaching for years and the approach described by Now Teach closely matched my needs. It was immediately obvious that Reach Academy was an excellent school, a place where both the pupils and teachers can thrive. I really wanted to be a member of the Academy team. It was also clear that the support and resources are in place to enable a successful training year.
Don’t be afraid of change or the challenge. Everyone I have met is supportive, wants you to succeed and every trainee has applicable skills. Do consider the change seriously as it is a significant commitment; if appropriate do talk with your family to ensure you have their support; invest time to learn about the teaching opportunity, Now Teach and do visit some schools.
